A lonely fat man discovers an unwanted visitor in his stack of bananas - a spider the size of a man's fist. Instead of killing it, or throwing it out, he takes pity on the beast and lets it stay for a while. It is the beginning of a magnificent friendship....

The Farda edition by Steve Roach Lloyd Hollingworth Literature Fiction eBooks

Author Steve Roach's "The Farda" is a fantastic dark comedy that is easily on par with some of the old "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "The Twilight Zone" episodes.

An obese loner befriends a talking spider. But who's playing whom?

With a spider--whose very mention, let alone nature, is abhorrent to many--Roach has natural tension built. There is the constant fear that the spider is spinning a story that will allow it to entwine and then kill at the opportune moment. And given the nature of the human character Dorey (who loves nothing more than to eat) the suspense of whether he may suddenly decide to devour the hefty-sized spider grows with each page--and with Dorey's waistline.

The dialog and exposition are perfectly balanced, with each component lending the principal characters an amazing quality of depth and dimension that normally show themselves best in novels.

"The Farda" is a funny, creepy, and grotesque dark comedy that will keep you in stitches and suspense.

Note: "The Farda" was originally read as part of a discontinued short story collection by Steve Roach.

The Farda edition by Steve Roach Lloyd Hollingworth Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this well written short story. The author definitely has talent.

It is pretty amusing and though you can guess what is going to happen I still found it to be enjoyable and a worthwhile read
If you have arachnophobia, then this story will probably make you very wary of reaching into a pile of bananas and keep you scanning the uppermost corners of your house. I was pleasantly surprised by the tale, perhaps because the title envoked images in my head of a turban clad male playing a flute like instrument, whilst enticing a snake. Nope, the spider just happens to have a Jamaican accent, mon. I really liked the connection and parallels between human and spider. It is also an example of how humans are more likely to act upon base instinct than they are aware of and how we imagine ourselves to be superior to all live forms. I enjoyed the read.
